Stone axes have been used since very early times and their use continued over several periods in various parts of Mesoamerica. It is a daily work tool with a blade at one end. The basic shape is a trapezoid, although the size varies as some are short and others long, as in the case of this piece, and ax number 424. They were made from different raw materials that were selected because of specific properties of the rocks and minerals.
The general process for making axes as follows: after acquiring the raw material, the size is reduced using the direct or indirect pounding technique on the stone until a suitable shape is achieved. Then it is modeled using a grinding technique with volcanic rocks or brittle sand and water. Lastly it is polished with abrasives, water and pieces of leather before being burnished with pieces of dry leather.
