This piece of furniture for storing papers is the product of the artisan Jorge Cueva E. of the city of Quito, Ecuador, and was made in 1942. The piece corresponds to the neocolonial endeavors favored during the first half of the twentieth century. The fronts of the drawers show plates of sgraffito and tinted bone, a bestiary comprised of real and fantastical animals. The lower part of the middle drawer shows figures of archangels with baroque dress of Flemish influence. The center drawer is the largest of all; there are architectural elements and an image of the Virgin Mary holding the Holy Infant in her lap, and an orb surmounted by a cross in her hand in the style of Salvator Mundi. The bone plates contrast with the warmth of the tortoiseshell. The handles are made of silver. The signature is written inside the lower right drawer; the one that bears the lion. The drawers are assembled using dovetail ts.
