Gallery 6. Christ, stories and representations

We gather here scenes related to the image of Christ with different approaches and styles. This variety shows, apart from the central spotlight that Jesus had in viceregal devotion, the different ways of representing him and interpreting his message, according to the requirements of those who commissioned and created these objects.

In some cases, we see images that portray different moments in the history of Christ, such as his childhood, crucifixion, or the moment when his mother mourns his death. Some scenes were inspired in the Bible or in texts approved by tradition. The narrative was achieved by means of the composition, locating the characters in clearly recognizable spaces, or by using attributes or symbols. These scenes and stories could be read or listened to by a broader audience.

Other representations created images related to concepts, ideas, or symbols, rather than stories. In these cases, it was frequent that the viewers were familiar with the elements that aided in the understanding of the images, giving sense to details that otherwise would hardly be explained. This allegoric character, that is, representing ideas through concise elements, was quite extended in the viceregal period, and, at times, could be combined with the narratives.
