Gallery 9. 19th Century. Continuities and ruptures

The Independence movement represented substantial changes for the political, economic, and cultural life of Mexico. The transformation in the traditional production of artistic objects happened gradually, many people continued being faithful to their devotional images and spent part of their income in the acquisition of religious objects. In some cases, new materials and technologies were incorporated, such as the use of cotton instead of linen as a pictorial ; or the incorporation of new pigments.

However, profane themes in art such as still lifes and landscapes received a new impulse; comfort and luxury were sought in some aspects of daily life, furniture became more comfortable and social protocols changed slowly, turning more secular.
