Free-standing sculpture showing the Archangel Michael as a young gallant, winged and with crimped hair. He is portrayed standing on a cluster of clouds from which emerge four serene angelic faces and blue wings, symbolizing that Michael is the prince of angels and the envoy of God.[1] His arms are open in a triumphant posture, as he was seen by Saint John while writing the Revelation: "And the angel that I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his hand to heaven".[2]
Saint Michael is one of the three archangels who are mentioned in the bible whose texts indicate him as the first of the princes and custodian of the people of Israel.[3] He is also the archistratege of God and the Captain of the celestial militias, for having led the angels in the battle against the great dragon, which was defeated and cast out of heaven with his angels.[4]
The iconography of this archangel thrives especially on the Apocalypse.
